Give yourself a very merry Christmas by leaving the snow behind and heading to the tropical warmth of sunny Belize.

Feel the Warmth

Belizeans take all holidays seriously, and Christmas is one of our favorites. In Belize, you can spend your holidays on the beach and feel the warmth of the Christmas spirit all around you.

Make Merry at Mealtime

Belizeans pull out all the stops when it comes to holiday meals. Every region and cultural group makes its own special food, and you can enjoy them all. Some Belizeans make a combination of American-style and local specialties, and your meal might consist of turkey, cranberry sauce, rice and beans, and ham cooked with pineapple. Others serve roasted pig, white Relleno, and tamales.

Don’t think you have to give up your favorite egg nog, either. In Belize, we make a creamy rum drink called rum popo that is brimming with holiday spirit.

Dance the Days Away

Other countries may have carolers, but Belize has the Christmas Bram. This is a group of singers who walk through the streets singing, dancing, and spreading cheer. You’ll mostly see them in the villages near Belize City.

Jankunu dancing is a Garifuna tradition that takes place on Christmas afternoon. The Jankunu dance is a holdover from the Garifuna’s history as slaves, and it celebrates their freedom. Jankunu dance competitions take place in Dangriga and Seine Bight.

The Maya Deer Dance is a major event that brings dancers from all over Central America to take part in this ancient tradition. Held in Santa Cruz, the dance features 24 dancers dressed as various characters who act out a Maya legend.

Take Part in Las Posadas

Las Posadas is a nine-day celebration leading up to Christmas day that starts with a parade and a reenactment of the Christmas story. Held in the village of Benque Viejo del Carmen, this is a celebration of song, dance and food you will never forget.

Attend Midnight Mass

Most Belizeans are Christian, and mass is an important part of the holiday. Attending midnight mass at a local church is a deeply spiritual experience.
